A Word from Pastor Morris Garner

“For more than 180 years, this church has been a place where God's people gather to worship, to grow, and to look after one another. That has not changed. If you are searching for a church home, or just need somewhere to rest your soul on a Sunday morning, we would be honored to have you with us.”

Since 1840

Our History

Triumph Baptist Church has stood in Darlington Heights since 1840 — through generations of families, through hard seasons and glad ones, and through some of the most important chapters in Virginia's history.

Our church sits in Prince Edward County country, ground that helped carry the American civil rights movement. In 1951, a teenager named Barbara Johns led a student strike at Moton High School in nearby Farmville over the conditions Black students were forced to accept. That protest became one of the five cases folded into Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court decision that ended legal school segregation in America.

Triumph Baptist Church has partnered with the Moton Museum to host the annual Barbara Johns Day Service, honoring her legacy and that of the Prince Edward County citizens who fought for educational equality — and remembering the role the Black church played in the movement.

This community also gave the nation Rev. Dr. Vernon Johns, born in Darlington Heights in 1892. He pastored Court Street Baptist Church in Lynchburg, served as president of Virginia Theological Seminary and College, and later pastored Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama — the pulpit Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would take up after him.

We do not take that inheritance lightly. It is why we keep the doors open, keep the Word preached, and keep making room for the next generation.
